Why Green?

Green living is all about being conscious of the impact we have on the environment, from the food we eat to the vehicles we drive, and making small changes to alleviate some of the burden we put on the Earth.

And if you can purchase a hybrid vehicle, all new energy-star appliances, and install some solar panels on your roof, that's fantastic. But if you don't have the finances to make those costly changes (and I certainly don't), do what you can, when you can. Striving to be the perfect environmentalist will drive you mad!

Follow the green mantra of "reduce, recycle, reuse". Reduce your consumption, recycle what you can, and reuse things that you (or other people - think CraigsList) have used before.

Applying these same basic principles to your event, whether it is a birthday party for a few select guests or a giant wedding, can make a world of difference. Peruse Hudson Valley Green for some great ideas and local vendors who are doing their part to limit their impact on the environment.

Check out how well you're doing - in terms of your piece of the burden that you put on Mother Earth - here at Ecological Footprint.org. After you take the ecological footprint quiz, think about some of the small changes you can make - maybe it's composting your vegetable/fruit scraps or carpooling one day a week to work or switching household cleaning products to ones that are free of petroleum products. Trust me, it will feel great!

Happy Living,
Lizzie
